Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Eighty young people from the Darling Downs region will receive personalised employment assistance on a new state government funded skilling project

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine said the Downs Industry Schools Cooperation Inc (DISCO) would run the YES (Youth Employment Support) project thanks to a $141,380 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.

“DISCO has proven themselves very capable in the delivery of employment projects because they understand and respond to the needs of local employers and citizens,” Mr Mickel said.

Mr Shine said the area would benefit from an influx of job-ready young people ready to step into local vacancies.

“While mainstream unemployment is at historical lows, youth unemployment is still higher than it should be,” Mr Shine said.

“By giving our disadvantaged young people customised assistance we give them the best chance of gaining and maintaining work and contributing to the continued health of Queensland’s economy. “

DISCO CEO Mike Paton said the YES project would be delivered in three locations – Toowoomba, Oakey and Dalby.

“Participants will receive individual assistance in areas including career planning; job preparation activities; accredited training and non-accredited training,” Mr Paton said.

The Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE will provide up to 5,000 hours of training for participants through direct grant funding from the Department of Education, Training and the Arts.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s
$1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
