Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Domestic tourists spent an extra $189 million on the Sunshine Coast last year according to the latest National Visitor Survey results.
Desley Boyle, who was sworn in as Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry yesterday, released the figures today.
“I am excited because I already have a track record for lobbying for opportunities in the regions of Queensland. The regions are where there are big growth and opportunities for the future.”
Ms Boyle said the Sunshine Coast region attracted $1.5 billion in domestic overnight expenditure in the year ending June 2007.
“This is an impressive increase of 15 per cent and ranks the Sunshine Coast among the largest tourism regions in Australia for expenditure,” Ms Boyle said.
“This fantastic increase in expenditure was thanks to the more than 2.9 million domestic visitors who spent 11 million visitor nights on the Sunshine Coast last year.
“The figures make the Sunshine Coast the third most visited destination - after the Gold Coast and Brisbane - in Queensland by the domestic market.”
Ms Boyle added that the strong increases seen in expenditure and visitation was thanks to a 13 per cent increase in the holiday market.
“The Sunshine Coast really is a destination perfect for holidays so it is no surprise that more than 1.8 million domestic residents visited for that reason,” she said.
“The strongest market for the Sunshine Coast was intrastate holiday visitors with 72 per cent of domestic overnight holiday visitors to the region coming from Queensland.
“The number of Queenslanders holidaying on the Sunshine Coast over the past year increased 18 per cent.
“That means more than 1.3 million of us chose to holiday on the Sunshine Coast in the last year.”
Ms Boyle said Tourism Queensland continued to work in partnership with Tourism Sunshine Coast and industry to develop and promote the diversity of quality tourism offerings on the Sunshine Coast, both domestically and internationally.
“The great figures show that our partnership marketing is really paying off,” she said.
“Tourism is the major economic and employment contributor to the region and I am looking forward to see the Sunshine Coast continue to grow as a tourism destination.
“The figures are great news for the Sunshine Coast and great news for the Queensland tourism industry.”
