Australians are flocking to Townsville, with the latest National Visitor Survey showing a rise of 25 per cent in domestic overnight visitor numbers.

Desley Boyle, who was sworn in as Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry yesterday, released the figures today.

“I am excited because I already have a track record for lobbying for opportunities in the regions of Queensland. The regions are where there are big growth and opportunities for the future.”

Ms Boyle said the new figures showed that domestic overnight visitors were staying longer.

“Townsville is becoming increasingly popular for domestic tourists, as our figures show,” Ms Boyle said.

“The city welcomed more than 1.1 million domestic overnight visitors in the year ending June 2007, a considerable increase of 25 per cent on the year before.

“That’s an additional 219,000 domestic overnight visitors in one year, which is an excellent result for the Townsville region.

“The number of domestic visitor nights also increased by 36 per cent to over 4.5 million.”

Ms Boyle said an increased numbers of Queenslanders were among those holidaying in Townsville.

“Queenslanders themselves are appreciating the top holiday experiences on offer in Townsville, with a 24 per cent increase in the number of Queensland holidaymakers heading to the region,” she said.

“This equates to nearly 300,000 Queenslanders.

“The other positive news for Townsville is the rise in business tourists.

“The number of business tourists grew by 18 per cent to over 300,000 in the year to June 2007.

“These are extremely strong results for Townsville, which shows the continued growth of tourism in the region and the ongoing hard work being undertaken by Tourism Queensland, Townsville Enterprise Ltd and industry.”
