Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Domestic tourists spent more than $10.2 billion in Queensland over the past year according to the latest National Visitor Survey results.
Desley Boyle, who was sworn in as Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry yesterday, released the figures today.
“I am excited because I already have a track record for lobbying for opportunities in the regions of Queensland. The regions are where there are big growth and opportunities for the future.”
Ms Boyle said the $540 million increase in expenditure was led by more than 17.8 million domestic tourists, up seven per cent from the same time last year.
“The State also saw a three per cent increase in annual domestic visitor nights to 76.9 million,” Ms Boyle said.
“Strong state-wide tourism growth has been led by increased visitation from holiday visitors, up seven per cent to more than eight million.
“Holiday visitors also spent $6.1 billion, a six per cent increase from the same time last year.
“It is very encouraging to see Queensland visitors staying and playing locally with a ten per cent, or more than one million, increase in intrastate visitors.”
Ms Boyle said investment in tourism related infrastructure, including airport and convention centre upgrades, was helping to increase the business tourism market.
“Queensland received 3.6 million domestic business visitors to June 2007, a 13 per cent or 423,000 person increase,” she said.
“Overnight business visitors stayed more than 11 million visitor nights in Queensland last year.
“The business tourism market now accounts for 20 per cent of all domestic visitors to Queensland.”
Ms Boyle said the Queensland Government has undertaken extensive work under the Queensland Tourism Strategy to increase development and marketing of the state domestically.
“The Queensland Government, through Tourism Queensland, launched a $6.5 million ‘Where Else But Queensland’ domestic tourism campaign to strengthen interstate tourism last year,” she said.
“This, partnered with product development initiatives, is ensuring that Queensland continues to benefit from domestic visitation.”
