Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

New Minister for Sport Judy Spence said she’s looking forward to getting more involved in Queensland sport and encouraging the community to take part in recreational and sporting activities.

“Queensland has a wonderful sporting tradition and I am excited at the opportunity to promote and enhance sport in this state,” Ms Spence said.

“I have played sport, continue to be active and regularly attend both local, community and major sporting events throughout Queensland.”

Ms Spence said she has four priorities for the Sport portfolio.

“I am keen to get the community more actively involved in recreation activities which promote a healthy lifestyle.”

“It is vital that we keep pushing the message that being active is crucial to maintaining your health.

“I am also keen to get the community more involved in coordinated social sporting competitions which can help improve self esteem, increase your circle of friends and provide young people with an avenue to focus their energies and divert them away from trouble.

“I will focus on continuing to provide for and improve programs for Queensland’s elite athletes and sportspeople so Queenslanders can continue to shine on the national and international sporting stage.”

“Importantly, my other priority will be to continue to attract both major Australian and International sporting fixtures and events to Queensland, such as a permanent Bledisloe Cup fixture and regular Socceroos internationals, to add to Queensland’s hosting of the Rugby League World Cup in 2008.”

“We have excellent facilities at the Queensland Academy of Sport to continue developing the wonderful natural sporting talent we develop in Queensland.”

Ms Spence said she wants to continue to showcase Queensland’s sporting prowess and facilities to the world.

“We already have a number of top sporting events in Queensland including the Gold Coast Indy 300, the Australian PGA and ANZ Ladies Masters Golf Championships, the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival, the Australian Women’s Hardcourt tennis championships, the Grand Prix Cycling Tour and this month’s Australian University Games on the Gold Coast.”

“The excellent sporting facilities the government has developed including Suncorp Stadium, the Gabba, the new Skilled Park on the Gold Coast and the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre at Nathan mean Queensland has the sporting infrastructure to hold other world sporting events.

“Many of these facilities will be also used by international sporting teams training for next year’s Beijing Olympics and I will be promoting our sporting infrastructure to other countries ahead of the games.”

“I am looking forward to promoting sport to the community in Queensland.”
