The Minister for Women, Margaret Keech, has welcomed the election of Anna Bligh as Queensland’s first female Premier as proof of the Government’s commitment to merit appointments.

Mrs Keech said Ms Bligh’s appointment gives effect to the Government’s proactive approach to ensure women of ability aren’t held back by the notorious “glass ceiling”.

“Anna Bligh is a woman of enormous talent and vision, and that has been recognised unanimously today by her Caucus colleagues,” Mrs Keech said.

“Labor State Governments have been strong advocates for the appointment of women to senior positions, and they don’t come any more senior than Premier.

“Ms Bligh’s election should serve as an inspiration to all women that talent is more important than gender in choosing our community leaders.

“Women tell me that today’s election of Anna Bligh by Caucus is not only a celebration, but a new era for the Smart State.”
