Residents of the Townsville–Thuringowa region have embraced a new intensive support service for vulnerable children and their families.
Communities Minister Warren Pitt said the service, which will be launched today, was one of 10 new Referral for Active Intervention services being introduced across the state as part of an $8.5 million Queensland Government initiative.
“The Referral for Active Intervention program aims to reduce the number of families falling into crisis and children going into care through the Department of Child Safety,” Mr Pitt said.
“The program targets young children and their families who have been assessed as having a low risk of entering the child protection system but who could benefit from active intervention services.
“Clients have access to various support services including information, assistance with everyday tasks such as budgeting and behaviour management, and access to a case manager.”
The Townsville-Thuringowa Referral for Active Intervention service is currently helping 40 clients, while 18 other clients have benefited from its services during the past few months.
“The Queensland Government provided Relationships Australia with funding of $653,184 to establish this vital community service in the Townsville–Thuringowa region,” Mr Pitt said.
“I have also allocated $90,000 a year to Australian Red Cross Queensland to provide the RAI ancillary service, which offers ongoing support to Indigenous families that need assistance.
“These services will help vulnerable children and their families as well as the wider community.”
Mr Pitt said the early intervention program aimed to protect vulnerable children, support families and, ultimately, build safe, healthy and inclusive communities.
Other RAI services are operating in Ipswich, Loganlea/Beenleigh/Eagleby, Inala/Goodna, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Deception Bay/Redcliffe/Caboolture, South Burnett, Rockhampton and Cairns.
