Queensland police officers will hit the ground running in the Northern Territory tomorrow as part of the national initiative to address child sexual abuse, Minister for Police Judy Spence said today.

“The 11 Queensland police officers we committed to Task Force Themis have been in training since they left for the Northern Territory late last month,” Ms Spence said.

“They will officially start their work tomorrow with 6 officers to be based at Katherine and 4 to be based at Nhulumbuy while Superintendent Tonya Carew will continue to work at the Task Force Themis command in Darwin.

“The officers based in Katherine will perform duties at Minterri, Bulman (Gulin Gulin) and Yarralin and police based at Nhulumbuy will work in the Gapiwiak, Ramingining and Galiwinku communities.”

Ms Spence said Queensland was the first state to send police to the Northern Territory to work on Task Force Themis.

“We have sent some of our best officers including three investigators with a background in the area of offences against children and seven general duties police.”

“Superintendent Carew is also widely recognised for her experience working with indigenous people and victims of sexual abuse in regions including Mareeba, Longreach, Charleville and Ipswich.

“Queensland provided these officers to the Northern Territory after Indigenous Affairs Minister, Mal Brough, committed $12 million funding to build housing for police serving in Queensland Indigenous communities.

“We will now be able to provide some of the 29 extra police we promised to Queensland Indigenous communities sooner thanks to this agreement with the Federal Government.”

Ms Spence said the Queensland police officers have been sworn in as Northern Territory police officers and will serve for 6 months on Task Force Themis.
