Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Minister for State Development John Mickel today announced Queensland Government funding of $160,000 for Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) projects for the Sunshine Coast communities of Nambour and Imbil.

He said advertisements will be placed in local and national newspapers to fill the position of project manager for each community.

“The Department of State Development will contract a professional to provide project management services – including training – and to subcontract a part-time local project coordinator”, Mr Mickel said.

“BR+E projects use community volunteers to conduct a survey of local businesses to gauge perceptions about the local business environment. Survey questions are based on a template but are tailored to suit local community needs.”

Mr Mickel said the projects would be overseen by a community task force with representatives from across the community as well as business and community groups.

“The local coordinator in each of the communities of Imbil and Nambour will provide a continuous presence and support for the project volunteers,” Mr Mickel said.

“Community partners in the BR+E program will play a vital role in providing in-kind support and communicating with businesses and local people.”

In Imbil, the project partner is the Mary Valley Show Society, which supports local business through the Imbil Development Group.

The project partners for Nambour are the Maroochy Shire Council and the Nambour Futures Group.

“The Queensland Government is proud to support local government and businesses in the revitalisation of Nambour”, Mr Mickel said.

“Nambour has a rich history and an exciting future as the natural Hub of the Hinterland for the Sunshine Coast. And Imbil has its own unique opportunities.

“A lot of investment, both public and private, is planned for the Mary Valley and for Nambour over the next decade. These BR+E projects will help ensure that local communities get the most benefit from that investment.

“However, the success of them will depend on the pride and involvement of Imbil and Nambour locals in their own communities. I urge people to take part and I am very confident of positive outcomes from both projects”, Mr Mickel said.
