A major maritime restoration project at the home of historic World War II warship, HMAS Diamantina, has secured a major project management prize for the Department of Public Works.

The department received the Australian Institute of Project Management (Qld) President’s Award for the project, which saw the construction of a $3 million concrete dock gate at the end of the Goodwill Bridge at South Bank.

Minister for Public Works Robert Schwarten said the Queensland Maritime Museum Dock Gate Project – one of three departmental wins – was a prime example of excellence in stakeholder management.

“A one-team approach was adopted in the delivery of this unique project and its success can be directly attributed to the high level of consultation with all stakeholders throughout the project,” Mr Schwarten said.

“As well as replacing the old dock gate, the team successfully ensured that no damage occurred to the historic HMAS Diamantina, especially when it was floated out of the dock and then returned upon the new gate’s completion.”

Another winner for the department was Senior Project Manager Stephen Chomyn who took out an individual award and was praised for his work in redeveloping the heritage-listed Rosemount Hospital.

“The Rosemount Hospital is the only military hospital developed as a result of World War I that has survived in Queensland,” Mr Schwarten said.

“Stephen has shown excellent project management and respect to the original buildings during the redevelopment, which has so far seen the transformation of some of the site’s buildings into operational facilities.”

The student award went to Project Services Business Manager Ian Baxter, who recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Project Management at the Queensland University of Technology.

“Ian’s new qualification is proving invaluable to his management of projects such as the annual fit out of the Queensland Government pavilion at the RNA Showgrounds, and his mentoring of junior project managers,” Mr Schwarten said.

Winners of State awards will now represent Queensland in the national AIPM awards in Hobart on 9 October.
