Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of Queensland Ambulance Service personnel.

Mr Roberts recently requested Department of Emergency Services Director-General Fiona McKersie to undertake a comprehensive audit of assaults on ambulance officers at a regional level.

The audit revealed an increasing trend in assaults on ambulance officers, with 33 recorded in 2004-2005, 32 in 2005-2006, and 44 in 2006-2007.

“In my opinion a single assault on ambulance officers is one too many,” Mr Roberts said.

“I’ve written to the Attorney-General asking for a review on sentencing in regards to those who assault Emergency Services staff, and I’ve also sought the support of the Premier.

“Since becoming Minister this issue has been raised with me and it’s one I’m determined to follow through on.

“The Queensland Ambulance Service faces enough challenges responding to unprecedented demand without having its officers fear for their safety.”
