The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is urging owners and occupiers throughout the Northern region to ensure they comply with budget accommodation regulations.
QFRS Assistant Commissioner for Community Safety and Training, Reg Christiansen, said recent investigations undertaken by the QFRS have uncovered several overcrowded residential premises.
“In two cases in the Bowen area, building owners housing more than 20 people, mainly backpackers and fruit pickers who are believed to be temporary to the area, were issued with notices,” he said.
“A further six similar notices have been issued instructing owners and occupiers to reduce the numbers of residents staying in their accommodation to below six, in accordance with budget accommodation legislation.”
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the Queensland Government introduced some of Australia’s strongest fire safety regulations for budget accommodation following the Childers tragedy.
“It’s something we will continue to pursue,” he said.
“Anyone providing budget accommodation has an obligation to be aware of and comply with regulations designed to ensure safety.
“If a fire was to occur in some of these properties, these people may be in danger.”
Investigations and follow-up inspections are continuing and it is possible that prosecutions will follow if premises fail to comply.
