The Honourable Margaret Keech
International tourists spent 30 per cent more and stayed 35 per cent longer in the Townsville region according to the latest International Visitor Survey results released today by Tourism Minister, Margaret Keech.
Mrs Keech said that in the year ended June 2007, international visitor spending in the region increased by 30 per cent or $19 million to $83 million.
“The increase in spending reflected a significant boost to the number of international visitor nights spent in the region,” she said.
“International tourists are staying 35 per cent longer at more than 10 nights each on average.
“That speaks volumes about the strength of the local tourism industry.”
Mrs Keech said international holiday visitors accounted for 85 per cent of all international visitors to the region.
“These figures are excellent news for Townsville’s burgeoning tourism industry,” Mrs Keech said.
“The Townsville region has so much to offer international visitors and is one of Queensland’s most diverse holiday destinations.
“Tourism Queensland has been working closely with Townsville Enterprise to develop new marketing and development opportunities, and these latest figures show this work is certainly paying dividends for local operators.”
