INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS DOING BIG BUSINESS IN TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND

The number of international business visitors to Tropical North Queensland skyrocketed by 35 per cent in the year to June 2007 according to the latest International Visitor Survey results released today, Tourism Minister, Margaret Keech, said.

“This equates to 32,000 international business travellers to Tropical North Queensland - a massive increase and a fantastic outcome for Tropical North Queensland,” Mrs Keech said.

“International business visitors are fast learning the benefits of both working and playing in this iconic region of Queensland.

“The number of nights these business travellers stayed also rose by an exceptional 44 per cent, bringing the total number of nights spent in Tropical North Queensland to nearly 170,000.”

Mrs Keech said the number of nights spent in the region by all international visitors had also grown.

“Overall, close to seven million nights were spent by international visitors in Tropical North Queensland in the year to June 2007, an increase of six per cent,” she said.

“Within this we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of nights spent by visitors from the key markets of the UK and the US.

“The number of US visitor was up by seven per cent to 107,000, and they stayed an average of six nights which is an overall increase of 18 per cent.

“UK visitors stayed an average of 9.7 nights, representing a total increase in visitor nights of 10 per cent.”
