BRAVO FOR BRIBIE BEAUTIFIERS

Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Ten Northern Brisbane jobseekers will tomorrow celebrate the successful completion of a skilling project that gave them paid work and valuable horticultural skills beautifying Bribie Island.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan said the project was brought to life thanks to a $359,950 Skilling Queenslanders for Work Grant.
"Queensland's economic growth is at risk because of a lacked of skilled workers,” Mr Mickel said.
“Our booming economy helped cut the state’s unemployment rate to a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent.
"Projects like this give disadvantaged jobseekers the skills for work and help to alleviate some of this economic pressure.”
Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan said that as the workforce aged, Queensland needed to get as many people as possible into the workforce.
“The key to that is to help people build the skills needed by employers and industry”, Mrs Sullivan said.
“The great thing about community projects like this is that the participants, while building their own skills, are providing invaluable infrastructure for the community”.
Participants in the graduating intake revitalised Buckley's Hole by restoring walkways, erecting signs, restoring vegetation and controlling weeds.
“The State Government funds all the wages and the local Council has partnered with Caboolture Area Youth Service who helped participants identify vacancies and apply for jobs.
“Already two of the 10 participants have found jobs which is a great outcome so soon after the project has ended.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government's $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
