The Honourable Warren Pitt

Springfield residents with a disability and their families now have access to vital new services as a result of a Queensland Government initiative that was officially launched today.

Disability Services Minister Warren Pitt today opened the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland’s new Day and Community Access Program in Springfield.

The new program, which is funded through the government’s Strengthening Non-Government Organisations initiative, focuses on lifelong learning, skills development and networking opportunities for local residents with a disability. Disability Services Queensland has allocated $82,300 for program set-up and an additional $454,000 in recurrent funding for the ongoing provision of services.

“Springfield residents with a disability now have access to additional new services to help them access and interact within the community,” Mr Pitt said.

“This includes programs to assist with independent living and day services. Centres such as this provide more than just support – they offer people with a disability more choice and better opportunities for a brighter future.”

The Cerebral Palsy League will run the new Springfield program.

“We applaud Disability Services Queensland for helping provide this vital new program,” said Bruce Milligan, CEO of the League,” Mr Pitt said.

“This program responds to a vital need within the community and we were fortunate to secure a building which is very convenient for our Springfield clients.

“As well as the independent living programs, the service also includes social and artistic programs such as photography and visual arts. All in all, it is a coup for local residents with a disability and will go a long way to improving the quality of their day-to-day lives."

Three program streams will be offered to Springfield residents with a disability, including centre-based programs that focus on lifelong learning and skills development, community access support and arts initiatives.
