Before this year the last time Queensland’s unemployment rate was as low as 3.5% more than 40% of today’s Queenslanders weren’t even born, said Deputy Premier and Treasurer Anna Bligh.
“The State’s August jobs figures show our unemployment rate remains at an unbelievable 3.5%,” she said.
“This is the lowest rate since the start of the monthly labour force survey in 1978.”
“Not since Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister, Wally Lewis was playing for Valleys, (lost BRL grand final to Easts 14-10) and Hollywood was making the first of its nine Halloween movies has unemployment been this low.”
The nation’s August rate remains unchanged at 4.3%.
“We have now been below the national average for 38 months.”
“Queensland created 73,500 jobs in the year – this is more than any other State. Of these 67,500 were full-time.
“This represents 30% of the nation’s new full-time jobs over the year.
“We truly are nation-building up here,” she said.
