Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

UNEMPLOYED IN DALBY TO BOOST INDUSTRY RANKS

Dalby’s booming industry will have a pool of job-ready employees to dip into thanks to a $166,820 Skilling Queenslanders for Work jobs training project.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said 75 disadvantaged local jobseekers would have an excellent chance of finding work.

“They’ll get training in growing industries having difficulty attracting suitable staff,”
Mr Mickel said.

“All participants will undertake a generic job skills training course before being streamed into an accredited course in either engineering/manufacturing, retail/administration or in the rural industry.

“The manufacturing sector continues to grow, there’s a new shopping complex in town, and the dominant rural sector is about to get a boost with the new feedlot being built which is expected to employ 100 workers.

“The whole of Queensland is booming which has helped cut the state’s unemployment rate to 3.5 percent but there are still people who need skills to get meaningful work.

“Projects like this are helping give people the skills needed by employers and industry,” he said.

Dalby’s Chamber of Commerce & Industry manager Kerryn Calle said the funding was a boon for the town and project participants.

“It’ll change the lives of the individuals involved while accessing pockets of untapped labour within the broader Dalby community,” Ms Calle said.

”We’re expecting at least 50 participants to be employed as a direct result of this project.”

TAFE has contributed a direct grant of $200,000 for the accredited training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
