Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONS MEAN BIG BUSINESS FOR BRISBANE
The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre continues to attract record numbers of conventions to the city Premier Peter Beattie said today.
Mr Beattie told State Parliament that in the past eight weeks, the Centre’s International Bidding Team had confirmed that another 10 major international conventions were coming to Brisbane between 2008 and 2012.
“Between them, these 10 conventions will deliver 11,500 delegates to Brisbane with an estimated economic benefit to Queensland of at least $28 million,” Mr Beattie said.
“The latest successes mean a total of 77 new international and national conventions have been confirmed for the Centre during the past 12 months. That level of bookings is unprecedented.
“There are few businesses as cut throat and competitive as the international convention market – yet Brisbane continues to thrive.
“It shows Brisbane is a significant player in the lucrative convention market and I congratulate the Centre’s management, and their partners at Brisbane Marketing on their achievements,” Mr Beattie said.
“The latest confirmations include an interesting mix of topics. They range from the 29th International Symposium on Sea Turtle Conservation and Biology in 2009, to the International Federation of Information Processing World Computer Congress 2010, and the Asian and Oceania Congress on Child Neurology 2011.”
The full list of recent confirmations for international conventions is:
• Asia Pacific Conference on Vision 2008
• Research In Education International Conference 2008
• 29th International Symposium on Sea Turtle Conservation and Biology (2009)
• International Symposium on Remote Sensing 2010
• 20th International Maritime Pilots Congress 2010
• International Horn Symposium 2010
• IFIP World Computer Congress 2010
• The IFLA World Library and Information Congress 2010
• Asian & Oceania Congress on Child Neurology 2011
• 2012 International Council of Archives Congress
“All of these events sit very comfortably with Queensland’s Smart State credentials,” Mr Beattie said.
Mr Beattie announced that Brisbane also intended to bid for one of the world’s top 20 conventions - the Annual World Dental Congress in 2013.
Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre is partnering with the Australian Dental Association and the Queensland Government, through Queensland Events, to bid for the four-day event.
“The convention would be expected to attract at least 8,000 delegates and their partners from around the world. Such an event would generate more than $16 million to the Queensland economy,” Mr Beattie said.
“Brisbane will present its bid submission in the next few weeks.
“The competition for international conventions is fierce, but Brisbane has a proven track record for staging successful major conventions and we will present an excellent bid submission for the World Dental Congress 2013,” Mr Beattie said.
