Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Queensland Youth Conference to broaden young minds
Youth workers and young people will explore challenging topics and swap ideas at the inaugural Queensland Youth Conference in Brisbane during the next two days (6–7 September).
Youth Minister Warren Pitt said about 300 young people and youth sector stakeholders from throughout Queensland would attend the conference, hosted by the Department of Communities.
“This conference is unique. It brings young Queenslanders, sector groups and government representatives together to share their wealth of knowledge, skills and experience,” Mr Pitt said.
“It is a valuable opportunity for everyone involved to listen and to learn from each other and work towards making Queensland a better place for all young people – wherever they live and whatever their circumstances.”
Presentations at the conference will cover topics such as education, Indigenous issues, living with a disability, leadership, health, drugs and alcohol, safe partying, cultural diversity, homelessness, recovering from trauma and volunteering.
Keynote speakers include 2007 Young Australian of the Year Tania Major, 2006 Queensland Young Achiever of the Year Jess Wellard and 2007 Young Queenslander of the Year Lars Olsen.
“Some speakers will raise confronting subjects that will challenge young people’s perceptions of life, society and themselves,” Mr Pitt said.
“The aim is to broaden their minds and attitudes, and help them develop as individuals and as community leaders. Conference outcomes will also help shape government policies and programs for young Queenslanders for years to come.”
“Today's young people have unique and diverse gifts and make tangible contributions to society. In fact, members of the Queensland Youth Council helped plan and organise this conference.”
