LITERACY AND NUMERACY AWARDS FOR QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS
Nine Queensland schools that are making a difference to literacy and numeracy education have been recognised nationally.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) Awards showcased teachers and schools that had taken innovative approaches to literacy and numeracy teaching.
“Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of learning, and are vital for young Queenslanders to successfully participate in education, the workplace and society,” Mr Welford said.
“I’m delighted so many Queensland schools have been recognised and rewarded for their achievements in this area.”
Mr Welford, who will present the schools with their awards at a ceremony in Brisbane tonight, said the schools had developed programs that had improved their students’ literacy and numeracy skills.
“Congratulations to these schools, particularly Pomona State School on the Sunshine Coast for winning a $10,000 Excellence Award,” he said.
“Through its Pathways to Success for Every Child initiative, Pomona State School has reduced the number of students requiring literacy and numeracy support, and increased the number of students who attained the national benchmarks.
The schools that won $5000 Highly Commended Awards are Good News Lutheran School, Seven Hills State School, Thornlands State School, Millmerran State School, Park Ridge State High School, Toowoomba South State School, Boondall State School and Kimberley Park State School.
Mr Welford said National Literacy and Numeracy Week, which runs from 3-9 September, was a partnership between the Federal, state and territory governments, enabling schools to highlight to the community their innovative learning programs.
“Twenty-two schools around Queensland have received $500 grants to organise community activities during the week that celebrate their initiative and commitment to improving literacy and numeracy education.
“Parents and community members are being invited to book readings, open days and workshops.”
