Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine

Attorney-General represents Qld at High Court swearing-in tomorrow

Attorney-General Kerry Shine will represent the State Government at the swearing-in of Queensland’s new High Court Justice Susan Kiefel in Canberra tomorrow (Monday, 3 September).

Mr Shine said the swearing-in was a personal milestone for Justice Kiefel and an historic occasion for Queensland and the High Court.

“Justice Kiefel is a former leading Brisbane barrister and Judge of Queensland’s Supreme Court, and since 1994 she has served as a Brisbane-based Justice of the Federal Court,” Mr Shine said.

“Justice Kiefel is only the seventh Queenslander to be appointed to the High Court. She is the first Queensland woman to be appointed.”

“For the first time since Federation, two women (Justice Kiefel and Justice Susan Crennan) will sit on the full bench of the High Court.”

“I am proud to represent the Queensland Government at the swearing-in of Justice Kiefel.”

“Queensland’s judiciary, legal profession and wider community are proud of Justice Kiefel’s achievements and her appointment to the High Court has been widely welcomed.”
