STAGG SCORES OFF FIELD AT SOUTHBANK INSTITUTE
Brisbane Broncos second rower David Stagg has scored off the field with an award for Excellence in Civil Engineering from the Southbank Institute of Technology.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford congratulated David on his recent graduation with an Advanced Diploma in Engineering (Civil), and winning the award sponsored by the institute’s industry partner, engineering firm GHD.
“David’s success is a great example of how TAFE can help students successfully combine study and a career, and create a pathway to university,” Mr Welford said.
“He received the award and a glass trophy for his academic results and dedication to his studies.
“Now, not only does David have a qualification which gives him hands-on skills when he decides to give up football for an engineering career, but he has a pathway to university to further develop his skills.”
David said while football was his main focus, gaining the qualification through Southbank Institute of Technology had created a pathway for his future.
“I’ve always been interested in how things worked and even started an engineering degree a few years ago but, after a year, decided I didn’t want to continue with my studies and went into a building apprenticeship.
“When that seemed to be another wrong direction, I looked around for something which gave me hands-on work in engineering and found the Southbank Institute’s advanced diploma.”
David has completed his studies as a part-time student to allow him to meet his professional football commitments.
“I enrolled at Southbank in the same year I started playing for the Broncos and my biggest challenge was managing my time and keeping focused on my studies,” he said.
“It was great to have the flexibility of doing part-time classes to allow me to make the most of my on-field career and now I have the advanced diploma, I’ve decided to give university another go.”
