Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
QUEENSLANDERS INVITED TO ‘TEST DRIVE’ PERFORMING ARTS
Thousands of Queenslanders will be invited to experience some of the state’s top performers and shows, thanks to a new statewide program aimed at introducing more people to the performing arts.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said Test Drive the Arts aimed to build new arts audiences around the state by offering first-time patrons a “try before you buy” experience.
“Test Drive the Arts offers a personal invitation to people to enjoy a great night out and be our special guests at a show,” Mr Welford said.
“The idea is to develop an ongoing relationship between the new patron and the company or venue.
“It’s a win for audiences because it’s a risk-free way to experience the arts. It’s also a valuable initiative for arts venues and companies because it will help to ensure the future vitality and diversity of the sector.
“For the venues and companies taking part, it harnesses an untapped asset – unsold seats.
“Arts Queensland figures show that while 76% of those interested in the arts were aware of our venues only 29% attended in the past 12 months.”
Mr Welford said the Beattie Government recognised the great value in building new arts audiences and has committed $124,000 to the program.
“The Federal Government has also provided $60,000 through the Australia Council,” he said.
“The Test Drive program has been a proven success in the United Kingdom, and it has been taken up by other countries, including New Zealand and Australia.
“The Queensland model is the largest Test Drive initiative in the country, with more than 20 companies and venues taking part across the state.
“Venues involved in the project include Brisbane Powerhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Ipswich Civic Hall, Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre, Logan Entertainment Centre and Cairns Civic Centre.
“Participating companies include La Boite Theatre, Opera Queensland, Queensland Ballet, Queensland Theatre Company, Queensland Orchestra, JUTE in Cairns and Townsville’s Tropic Sun Theatre Company.”
Queensland’s Test Drive the Arts program will be run in partnership with ourbrisbane.com, and it is the first time the initiative has been undertaken online.
Interested Test Drive patrons will register via a website - www.testdrivethearts.com - for complimentary tickets from a menu of performances. Patrons who enjoy the Test Drive experience will be eligible for further special offers and discounts.
