Rescue teams rise to the challenge

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said rescue teams that competed in the Queensland Mines Rescue Challenge this week helped maintain Queensland’s mine safety standards at a world-class level.

Ten teams from mines and quarries from Central Queensland and North Queensland competed in the annual event which was held over three days in Townsville.

“The teams were put through a series of simulated emergencies based on what could actually happen in or around a mine site,” Mr Wilson said.

“Some of the scenarios included dealing with hazardous materials, road accident rescue, mine search and rescue, vertical rescue and incidents in tunnels.”

The Department of Mines and Energy was one of the sponsors of the annual event.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service team, made up of officers mainly from Cairns, was the overall challenge winner.

The Cairns team was awarded the Department of Mines and Energy Chief Inspector’s Award for best overall team at a presentation dinner last night.

BMA Crinum was second and Zinifex Century third.

“The Mines Rescue Challenge helps in the continual quest to improve mine safety,” Mr Wilson said.

“The rescue scenarios help the teams improve their rescue skills, and the challenge helps raise awareness of mine safety.

“I commend all rescue teams for their efforts over the three day challenge, and the companies involved, for contributing resources to enable the teams to compete.

“Safety in the mining industry is paramount. We have developed the best mine safety and health legislation available.

"But it must be continued to be enforced - mine by mine, employer by employer, worker by worker,” Mr Wilson said.
