Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
QUEENSLAND DECLARES ‘RUSSIA WEEK’
Premier Peter Beattie has declared September 1-7 Russia Week in Queensland.
Mr Beattie said the week, which coincides with the APEC Summit in Sydney, features an important Business Forum in Brisbane to be attended by the largest Russian delegation to visit the Smart State.
Leading the delegation of 120 senior Russian government, business and media representatives will be Minister for Agriculture, His Excellency Mr Alexei Gordeyev.
“The fact Queensland was invited to host this event is testament to my Government’s success in developing opportunities for trade and collaboration around the world,” Mr Beattie said.
Developing links with Russia during the past three years has also delivered trade results. In the first 11 months of 2006-07, Queensland recorded a 78.9% growth in merchandise exports to Russia compared to the same period in 2005-06.
Mr Beattie said this represented an additional $170 million in merchandise export sales.
“In warmly welcoming our visiting delegation to Queensland next month, I am delighted Russia Week in Queensland will share the experience with the wider community through a number of cultural initiatives,” he said.
“There will be performances by Cossack dancers and folk dancers and singers in Queen Street Mall each lunchtime between September 4 and 6.
“An exhibition of works by a well-known Russian artist will be at the State Library from 3 to 7 September, and there’s an advance film screening ahead of a national Russian film festival.”
The State Library exhibition will feature paintings by prominent Moscow-based artist Zurab Tsereteli.
The advance screening of ‘The Island’ will be at the Palace Centro cinema in Brisbane on September 4, in the lead-up to the Russian Resurrection 2007 film festival later next month.
