Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence
MINISTER OFFICIALLY OPENS UPGRADED STANTHORPE POLICE STATION
A major expansion of the Stanthorpe Police Station is providing improved services for the local community and officers working in the town, Police Minister Judy Spence said today.
Ms Spence joined with Acting Police Commissioner Dick Conder to officially open the upgraded station this morning.
“This new pre-fabricated building attached to the main station, provides the local officers with the space they need to do their jobs of fighting crime and protecting the community,” Ms Spence said.
“In recent years, we’ve increased police numbers in Stanthorpe in line with the demands of the growing population, and the existing infrastructure has been unable to fully accommodate the additional officers.
“The provision of this additional building ensures all the police working at the station are now properly accommodated.”
Ms Spence said the new facilities include dayrooms and work stations for Constables and Sergeants, a separate office for the Officer in Charge and a storage room.
“This government provided over $300,000 for this station upgrade – as part of our commitment to building new police stations and upgrading existing ones right across this state.
“It is great to see the delivery of this infrastructure has improved the working environment for local officers and given rise to greater efficiency and staff morale.
“Police in this area are doing a great job, running proactive policing initiatives to combat liquor-related offences, drug offences and driver fatigue.
“As a result, roads in the Stanthorpe division remain fatality-free to date this year - a very impressive outcome, given the amount of heavy vehicle traffic which travels through the area.”
Acting Commissioner Dick Conder said the new building represents the ongoing commitment of the Queensland Police Service to ensuring the policing needs of rural communities, such as Stanthorpe, are being met.
“The station is now operating at full strength including 12 uniform officers, two traffic officers, two plain clothes officers and two administration officers. The station also has an allocation of four police vehicles.
“This significant increase in resources and staffing has allowed greater shift coverage of the division, in turn providing an improved service to the community and having a positive impact on the reduction of crime in the division.”
