Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
90 IPSWICH JOBSEEKERS BROADEN EMPLOYMENT HORIZONS
An Ipswich jobs project will give 90 disadvantaged jobseekers a range of training opportunities in skills shortage industries thanks to a $403,900 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Ipswich Rachel Nolan said 90 people would receive job preparation training and do modules towards TAFE qualifications or paid job placements.
“This project will give under skilled people opportunities to get a foot in the door in industries like aged care, business administration, horticulture, construction, engineering and retailing,” Mr Mickel said.
“They will gain skills, experience and qualifications in these growing industries and may well find they are in demand for their services.”
Member for Ipswich Rachel Nolan said Queensland’s economy was booming and more skilled workers were needed.
“The reality is that as the workforce ages we are going to need all the people we can get participating in the workforce,” Ms Nolan said.
“The key to that is to help people build the skills needed by employers and industry.”
Challenge Employment and Training program development officer Toni Leisfield said the training was designed to give participants a broad skills base increasing their employment options.
“This project provides flexible training in a range of skills that can be transferred across industries,” Mr Leisfield said.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
