Police Run Workshops To Help Young People Avoid Death On The Road

Workshops targeting young drivers on the Sunshine Coast have helped dramatically reduce the number of young people killed on the region’s roads so far this year, Minister for Police Judy Spence said today.

“Police have been running Attitudinal Driving Workshops since last December and have been targeting young drivers with excellent results,” Ms Spence said.

“So far this year there have not been any fatal crashes involving drivers aged between 16 and 25 years in the Sunshine Coast District.

“Last year 7 young people were killed and four of those were drivers.

“There has also been a massive 61.5% reduction in the number of young people injured, with 25 hurt between January and May this year compared to 65 for the same period last year.”

Ms Spence said the workshops are run in partnership with the Maroochydore RSL and have attracted more than 1500 participants.

“These workshops are designed to present young people with the tragic facts about the deaths and injuries that result from crashes.

“Guest speakers include police and emergency services personnel, nurses and even media representatives who regularly deal with the carnage that results from these crashes.

“These experts give young people a no holds barred description of the impact attending the scene of a crash has on them.

“These sessions are designed to make young drivers seriously consider the potential consequences of driving irresponsibly.”

Ms Spence thanked the Maroochydore RSL and the local media for actively supporting the workshops by providing a venue, marketing resources and an estimated $20,000 worth of free advertising for each workshop.

“The support the RSL and the local media provide to police is vital in getting the important message across to young people, to stay safe on the road.”
