Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Twenty long-term unemployed people from around Noosa will receive 18 weeks paid work with Noosa Shire Council and other local organisations.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provided $280,110 to fund the Noosa Shire Work Skills project.
“Jobseekers who complete a work placement learn new skills and have recent workplace experience so employers can be confident that they are ready to work,’ Mr Mickel said.
“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding and holding jobs.
“Programs like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.
“The project will target skills that are needed in the area which were identified in the Noosa Social Plan.”
Noosa Shire Council Manager Community and Recreation Development Sandie Pitter said participants would be placed with different local organisations.
“Most will work with the shire council but Brite-Side Recycling Centre, Noosa Community Training Centre, Carramar Noosa Homes for the Aged and Peregrian Surf Life Saving Club will also host some of the participants,” Ms Pitter said.
“With the support of these organisations we can offer participants different options so they can have a say in the fields they will work in to build skills and gain experience in an area that suits them.
“As well as the work placements the project will also provide 70 hours of accredited job preparation training and six months follow up support.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
