The fourth annual Premier’s Multicultural Photographic Awards open today with professional and amateur photographers being urged to enter images of cultural diversity that meet the theme New Beginnings.

Premier Peter Beattie said Queenslanders who captured New Beginnings in the most creative or engaging ways would be in the running for a share of $25,000 in cash and other prizes.

“The awards are open to all Queensland residents and I encourage professional and non-professional photographers, including school students, to get their entries in by Friday, November 2,” Mr Beattie said.

“With this year’s awards carrying the theme of New Beginnings, we are looking for images that show a positive element or benefit brought about by our rich cultural diversity,” he said.

“This could be portrayed in a variety of scenarios, from moving into a new home or starting at a new school, to assisting refugees and immigrants settle into their new lives and becoming valuable members of Queensland’s diverse multicultural community.

“First prize in the open category is $12,000, while $3000 goes to winners in the primary and secondary school student categories.

“The highly commended prize in the open category is $2000 and every short-listed entrant will also receive a prize.”

Mr Beattie said this year’s awards featured two new categories.

“While professional photographers can enter the open category, a new category is the Premier’s Professional Award to provide separate recognition of professional photographers and it is $3000 worth of photographic equipment.

“Another new award is the Minister’s Award for Digital Image Manipulation and it offers $1000 worth of photographic equipment.”

Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Queenslanders would again be able to vote online for a People’s Choice Award from the shortlisted entries which would be prominently displayed at South Bank Arbour early next year.

Ms Nelson-Carr said a retrospective exhibition of winning images from previous years would be part of the Queensland Multicultural Festival on October 14 at the Roma Street Parkland.

“The awards will be judged by professional photographers, arts representatives, academics and community leaders from metropolitan and regional areas,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Entry to the awards is free. Photographs must reflect or be inspired by multiculturalism in Queensland and be taken in Queensland,” she said.

“The Beattie Government developed these awards to acknowledge the importance of a culturally diverse society and to promote the growth of social equity and community harmony.

“Since the inaugural Photographic Awards in 2004, the number of entries has more than doubled from 251 to 608, so I encourage Queenslanders to keep up the momentum and submit entries that capture ‘New Beginnings’ in their communities.”
