The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Australian actor and Queenslander Sigrid Thornton has accepted the role of Queensland Government Multicultural Champion for 2007, Minister for Multiculturalism Lindy Nelson-Carr said today.
Ms Nelson-Car said Ms Thornton was delighted to accept the award, in doing so she follows in the footsteps of other great Queenslanders Pat Rafter who was the inaugural 2005 Multicultural Champion and 2006 Champion Nick Earls.
“Sigrid’s dedicated support for refugees and her role as ambassador for World Vision make her a fitting choice,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Sigrid will officially take over the role of Multicultural Champion at the Queensland Multicultural Awards Ceremony at Roma Street Parkland on 18 September 2007.
“Like her predecessors, she will lend her passion and talents to support cultural diversity in the Smart State.”
Ms Nelson-Carr also congratulated Nick Earls for his work with the multicultural community during his reign as champion.
“Nick has been a wonderful ambassador for diversity in our state over the past year. I wish him well in all his endeavours and look forward to reading his next book.”
