Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Australia’s new industrial laws will come under international scrutiny next month when a Queensland conference analyses the effects of Work Choices after 18 months’ operation.
Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel said the conference would feature expert speakers from overseas and Australia.
The conference, being organised this year by the Queensland Department of Employment and Industrial Relations, will be held at the Novotel Brisbane on September 11.
“The National Industrial Relations Conference - Restoring the Balance - is the third in the Fair Go conference series established in 2005 by the state and territory governments to debate the federal Government’s proposed legislative changes to industrial relations,” Mr Mickel said.
“The conferences give people witnessing the legislative impact on the workplace and the community a voice to air their concerns.”
“Work Choices impact on low-income and women workers in particular, will be highlighted.”
Mr Mickel said the conference would feature Harvard University Professor Richard Freeman, who will offer a North American perspective on the changes to Australia’s workplace relations laws.
“In addition, the conference will hear about the most recent research/ into workplace industrial relations, agreement-making and the impact of Work Choices on workers, their households and the community,” Mr Mickel said.
“But the conference also looks to the future and debates state and federal relations and the role federalism will play in the 21st century.”
