Construction of a new police station and watchhouse in Ayr is a step closer with the announcement of the successful tender for the project, Minister for Police Judy Spence said today.
“Abigroup has won the tender for this $9.25 million project which will provide police in Ayr with a modern police station and watchhouse,” Ms Spence said.
“The new facility will provide police with the latest infrastructure needed to conduct their duties in the Ayr region.
“We made a commitment to build a new police station and watchhouse at Ayr during last year’s election campaign and we are delivering on that promise.
“It is part of the Beattie Government’s $260 million commitment to create six new police divisions and build more than 20 new police stations and facilities around the state over four years.”
Ms Spence said the existing police station will be demolished to make way for the new station and watchhouse.
“A temporary police station has been established in the existing vehicle holding yard at the rear of the police reserve to provide accommodation for personnel during construction.”
“The existing watchhouse and the scenes of crime relocatable office building will be retained and will operate as normal until the new facility is constructed.
“Once the new watchhouse is completed, the existing watchhouse facility will be decommissioned and converted to provide additional storage for the new station.”
Ms Spence said the Ayr project is not the only capital works project police are completing in the region.
“Construction is underway on the new $5.2 million police station at nearby Stuart and police expect that project will be completed by early next year.”
“Both of these new police stations will provide vital infrastructure for police in a growing region and will cater for increasing officer numbers for years to come,” Ms Spence said.
