Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Five Smart State information and communication technology (ICT) companies will showcase their products around the world thanks to funding from the Queensland Government.
Minister for State Development John Mickel today announced the successful recipients of the International Trade Show Assistance Program (ITSAP) which helps small biotechnology and information communication technology (ICT) company’s exhibit in overseas trade shows.
He also encouraged other emerging Queensland exporters to apply for the latest and 18th round of funding which closes Friday, 7 September.
“It costs money to take products and services overseas, and often that’s money that small businesses often just don’t have,” Mr Mickel said.
“ITSAP, which began in 2000, provides grants up to $5000 to help relatively new companies build or expand their export markets and overseas networks.
“The latest ITSAP recipients include: Vigil Systems in West End; Smartype located in Milton; Sandpiper Education (Health e-Learning) in Aspley; Hamilton-based International Safety Systems; and eDiscovery Tools from Bardon.
“Congratulations to these firms. They’ll be showcasing their products, meeting key overseas contacts and keeping their eye on industry and competition trends at chosen events in the United States, United Kingdom and Korea.
“I look forward to hearing about their success.”
Sandpiper Education, trading as Health e-Learning, delivers a suite of accredited online courses for health professionals involved in perinatal care such as doctors, nurses and midwives.
It will use the ITSAP funding to offset the cost of attending the International Lactation Consultants Association (ILCA) Conference presently being held in the United States.
Director Steve Fisher said the company was showcasing its Baby Friendly software that is currently sold to hospitals and individuals in around 48 countries.
“There are currently around 3000 health professionals doing our courses at any one time. Our biggest client in Australia is Queensland Health, which has several hundred staff undertaking the training which covers pregnancy, birthing and breastfeeding
“There’s been some great feedback from the conference. We’ve generated leads and have new, potential clients trialling the products. Being directly exposed to the industry has also given us new ideas and we anticipate developing a new product in the near future as a result.”
Mr Mickel said ITSAP had so far helped 112 companies generate immediate export sales of more than $6 million.
“Previous ITSAP recipients have gained invaluable exposure far and wide in regions such as Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the UK, America and the Asia Pacific.”
Mr Mickel encouraged eligible ICT or biotech companies who had identified an export market, or had a product or service that had export potential and were export ready, to show the world the highly innovative products and services Queensland has to offer.
“This funding is for Queensland-based, small to medium businesses that primarily operate in the ICT or biotechnology areas and who employ less than 100 people – this means most of Queensland’s ICT and biotech companies.”
Application forms for the International Trade Show Assistance Program are available online at www.iiib.qld.gov.au. Companies have until Friday, 7 September 2007 to submit their application.
