Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Nambour’s main street will get a facelift while unemployed Sunshine Coast youth earn and learn, thanks to a $406,110 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said 20 young people would do paid work placements involving jobs like landscaping and installing street art and furniture.
“They will play an integral role in this beautification which will breathe new life into the town centre,” Mr Mickel said.
“As part of the wider project another 70 will do accredited training in hospitality and engineering, and 50 of them will also get job preparation assistance.
“Projects like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative give unskilled people the opportunity and ability to get meaningful work.
“Unemployment in Queensland is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent as a result of a strong economy combined with initiatives like this.
“The street beautification will contribute to the Maroochy Shire Council’s Nambour – Hub of the Hinterland project, designed to revitalise Nambour and ensure it remains the hub of the hinterland,” he said.
The project will be run by local youth training and development organisation NAMTEC Inc in association with Sunshine Coast TAFE.
NAMTEC general manager Andrew Marnie said it was a great result for the community and individual participants.
“The direct benefits to Nambour are obvious but we are also helping meet skill shortages in the community,” Mr Marnie said.
“Skilling participants - mostly long term unemployed 18-24 year olds – in these areas gives them an excellent chance to secure and maintain long term work.
“By combining skills development with practical experience, personal development and job-search training, they will have the skills, experience and confidence to get
a job.”
The Department of Employment, Training and the Arts has contributed $192,168 toward training for the project.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
