Supporting business growth in the Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast region remains a priority for the State Government according to Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan.

Representing the Minister for State Development John Mickel at tonight’s Rockhampton Regional Development Limited and Ergon Energy Business Excellence Awards at Rydges Yeppoon, Mr Hoolihan said the region had the potential to become one of the nation’s powerhouses.

“Already with just 5% of Queensland’s population it generates more than 10% of the State’s economic activity, employs more than 10% of the State’s workforce and is home to 6% of the State’s businesses,” he said.

Mr Hoolihan said the recently announced Centres of Enterprise initiative for Fitzroy and the Central West was now the vehicle being used to channel industry development efforts in the area.

“The area’s strong manufacturing and general engineering services capabilities are pivotal to the operation of existing regional industries and future expansion,” he said.

“There is without a doubt significant global market potential in agribusiness, metals, minerals and chemicals processing, steel fabrication and construction equipment.

The State Government undertakes to continue working with regional leaders to identify the associated and commercial opportunities that will ensure the region captures the benefits flowing from these developments.”

The Department of State Development provided $5000 in sponsorship to this year’s awards and assisted in the judging process.

The Department is also a long-term supporter of Rockhampton Regional Development Limited, signing a new four-year agreement to provide $1,000,000 in funding and support last year.

Tonight’s awards are being held at Rydges Capricorn Resort, Yeppoon from 6.30pm.
