Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson

The Mount Isa Underground Hospital and Beth Anderson Museum will be able to proceed with expansion plans following agreement with Queensland Health for the use of additional land, Health Minister Stephen Robertson said today.

Mr Robertson formally announced the agreement during a visit to Mount Isa hospital today.

The additional land includes a hill area behind the Mount Isa Hospital that was not included in any Queensland Health development planning.

“The Underground Hospital Committee identified the area as part of its expansion program some time ago,” Mr Robertson said.

“Committee members want to undertake expansions to their present facilities and create a better area for educational and historic reference.

“We are now in the process of formalising lease arrangements which will give the committee access to the land required.”

Mr Robertson said the underground hospital was established in 1942 and constructed because of concerns about Japanese air raids.

“The original hospital consisted of a small surgical, medical and maternity area, plus an operating theatre and outpatients department,” he said.

“The preservation of this part of Mount Isa’s history provides an important cultural dimension to the city and an additional tourist attraction for the area.

“I am extremely pleased to be able to make available the additional areas sought by Mount Isa Underground Hospital and Museum in order to expand their collection of medical memorabilia.”
