Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

Premier Peter Beattie today hosted a State Reception at Parliament House in Brisbane for 300 representatives of the Catholic community to officially welcome the World Youth Day Cross to Queensland.

The World Youth Day Cross and Icon are travelling into communities across Australia in the lead up to a celebration in Sydney next July with His Holiness Pope Benedict the Sixteenth.

Mr Beattie said the Queensland Government was contributing $44,000 for events for Queenslanders, as well as substantial in-kind support.

“I am delighted to be hosting the State reception with His Grace the Most Reverend John Bathersby to celebrate the World Youth Day Cross and Icon coming to Brisbane,” Mr Beattie said.

“It is wonderful to be sharing this celebration with students from many Catholic schools including St Eugene’s, St Kevin’s Primary, Carmel College, Siena and many more.

“As the Cross and Icon travel around the world, the celebration is generating a powerful expression of faith and Queenslanders are embracing that.

“It’s not just youth either who are getting involved – it is people of all ages, including many of our Queensland seniors.”

There are 30,000 people in the Brisbane Archdiocese taking part in some 48 events over 13 days, involving 51 Catholic schools and 13 deaneries.

The World Youth Day Cross and Icon travelled from NSW earlier this month to Toowoomba, Dalby, Chinchilla, Roma, Charleville, Cunnamulla, St George, Goondiwindi and Warwick, and is now in Brisbane.

From Brisbane, the cross will travel through regional Queensland to Cairns and then around the country, arriving back in Sydney in time for the World Youth Day celebrations with the Pope.

Archbishop Bathersby said: “It's possible that the appearance of the Cross reminds people of just how much they rely upon God and they thank God accordingly. God in turn may respond with even greater love and send us many blessings.”
