Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Six local Indigenous jobseekers in the Laura area will be offered training to become rangers for the area, managing local cultural sites and the natural environment thanks to the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Cook Jason O’Brien said the Ang-Gnarra Corporation had received $77,830 to coordinate the 21-week paid employment project.

“Laura is viewed locally, nationally and overseas as a highly significant natural and cultural area, so the maintenance and ongoing management of the area is important for the local people but has a much broader impact,” said Mr Mickel.

“The employment and training of these staff is part of the Ang-Gnarra Corporation’s Natural Resources Management Services project.

Member for Cook Jason O’Brien said while unemployment is at a 30-year low of
3.5 per cent in Queensland, Indigenous people in particular continued finding work.

“Programs like this under our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce,” he said.

Coordinator of the Land Management Centre Jana Kahabka said the project was funded by the Indigenous Land and Sea Board allowing the Corporation to purchase equipment and materials the participants will be using to address land management issues.

“I’m happy to say that five out of the six jobseekers will be considered for up to five full-time ranger positions at the completion of this project,” she said.

“The skills they’ll be exposed to are environmental management and rehabilitation of the infrastructure of the region, information collation and recording, fire management and vegetation regeneration.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
