Initial environmental testing at Milpera State High School has been completed with no evidence of contamination found, Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said today.

“I announced in April this year that a comprehensive investigation of the Milpera State High School site would be undertaken after health concerns about the site were raised with me,” Mr Welford said.

“Independent environment consultants have completed the first stage of the environmental site assessment at the site finding no evidence of environmental contamination.

“Soil samples were tested and found to meet the standard residential environmental and health investigation levels.

“The site is considered safe for staff and students and no further investigations are necessary to assess environmental contaminants within the soil.

“Water samples taken from the site conformed to Australian Water Quality Guidelines and no unusual or significant atmospheric contaminants were identified.

“I hope that this initial testing will help alleviate some of the concerns of staff and community members.”

Mr Welford said the health and wellbeing of staff and students was his highest priority and every effort was being made to keep staff, students and parents informed.

“An information session outlining the results of these initial tests has been well received by staff, and copies of the report will be made available to staff and other interested parties to view,” he said.

“In addition to the environmental site assessment, further workplace monitoring has begun at the sites to assess and, where possible, eliminate the existence of any other occupational risks.

“It is expected that this testing will take approximately three months to complete.

“I want to reassure staff and students that Milpera State High School is safe for all services to continue while further investigations are undertaken.”
