The Beattie Government today announced Innisfail is set to benefit from a multi-million dollar project to create a new future for state education, as part of the landmark $850 million State Schools of Tomorrow initiative.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said an estimated $20 million would be invested to help the local community create a new educational vision for Innisfail State High that would secure the best possible opportunities for young people.
“One of the most important influences on children’s education is the quality of the schools in which they learn,” Mr Welford said.
“State Schools of Tomorrow gives parents, teachers and the wider Innisfail community the chance to consider major modernisation and redevelopment ideas that support the delivery of a world-class education for decades to come.
One of the key features of this initiative is the potential to build strong partnerships between schools and their communities including training, TAFE, tertiary and childcare service providers.
“We want the local community to consider ideas about new curriculum choices, modern and innovative school design options, and the types of high-quality facilities that can be shared with the wider community.
“Independent community consultation will begin shortly to gather ideas that will more closely align the school with the community’s long-term educational needs.”
Member for Mulgrave, Warren Pitt, said the substantial investment would ensure a bright future for students of this generation and the next.
“I am delighted residents can have their say because it means we can tailor education to the individual needs of our community,” Mr Pitt said.
“There is already strong support for creating a new educational facility that would give students a seamless transition between all phases of learning and strengthen career pathways.
“We also have the chance to identify the types of exceptional facilities and resources that can be shared between the school community and the wider community, such as a new library or auditorium.
“These are just a couple of ideas that can be explored during community consultation and I urge all residents and neighbouring school communities to be involved and have their say.”
State Schools of Tomorrow is the major component of the $1 billion Tomorrow’s Schools package announced in the 2006-07 Budget and it is largest one-off investment in education in Queensland’s history. For more information visit: www.education.qld.gov.au/tomorrows-schools
