Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Premier Peter Beattie today welcomed new research by the Queensland Water Commission which shows South East Queenslanders continue to strongly support the addition of purified recycled water to our drinking supply.
“The survey of 1000 South East Queenslanders conducted during July has found that 74 per cent of those surveyed support the addition of purified recycled water to ensure water security,” Mr Beattie said.
“That’s exactly the same level of support as when the survey was conducted in December last year.
“The survey was conducted across the 12 council areas currently subject to Level 5 water restrictions.
“I am pleased to report that some 7 months after the first survey, community support for purified recycled water has solidified.
“Support is strongest amongst men – 76 per cent compared to 72 per cent for women surveyed.
“By age group the strongest positive response was 81 per cent of all people under 30 but support is high among all age groups with the lowest being 71 percent for people aged 60 and over.
“Support across the South East is consistent – 77 per cent of people living in the Brisbane metropolitan region support purified recycled water being added to our drinking water supply.
“The Gold Coast had 63 per cent and the Sunshine Coast response was 71 per cent in support,” Mr Beattie said.
The Premier said respondents were also asked – for the first time in this survey - if they were comfortable drinking pure recycled water. Again the response is heartening with 71 per cent of all respondents saying yes.
“The highest comfort levels are reported by men – 74 percent compared to 69 per cent for women. All age groups reported high levels of comfort – over 63 per cent and as high as 79 per cent for the under 30’s.
“I thank the people of South East Queensland for their open minded support for this vital water supply,” Mr Beattie said.
The Western Corridor Recycled Water pipeline is on track to begin adding purified recycled water to our dams by October 2008.
The first recycled water from the Bundamba treatment plant component of this project will be used later this month in the Swanbank Power Station
