Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Community and social issues invariably go hand-in-hand and the Sunshine Coast is no exception, which is why a Social Issues Forum has been organised as part of the multicultural celebration FESTURI this Sunday 26 August.
Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Multicultural Affairs Queensland granted $10,000 for the festival under the State Government’s Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP).
“Because FESTURI rejoices in the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Sunshine Coast, the forum will present an ideal opportunity for residents to gain a better understanding of community-wide social matters that may be of concern.
“The festival is an excellent vehicle for funding under the MAP which offers grants to community organisations for projects and occasions that promote multiculturalism, reduce prejudice and foster community involvement,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
Secretary of FESTURI Naomi Wiley said the forum would be a festival highlight and add a new dimension to the multicultural celebration.
“Discussions will cover topics such as refugee experiences, education, building sustainable culture and community.
“A broad range of speakers will include university lecturers and PhD candidates, school principals and religious leaders,” Ms Wiley said
In addition to the forum at the University of the Sunshine Coast campus between 10am and 4pm, festival celebrations will encompass world music, dance and art with events at the campus, Cooroy Butter Factory, and Lake Kawana Community Centre.
“Full marks to FESTURI for encouraging community participation in showcasing and valuing the Sunshine Coast’s cultural and linguistic diversity, “ Ms Nelson-Carr said.
