The Queensland Government has developed a new strategy that aims to improve services and support for the growing number of people experiencing dementia.
Minister for Communities and Disability Services Warren Pitt said the Home and Community Care (HACC) Dementia Services Development Strategy 2007–2011 would provide a clear direction to help meet future demands and provide necessary support for people with dementia.
“Dementia is a growing health and social issue with the number of people affected, directly and indirectly, expected to increase dramatically during the next 50 years,” he said.
“Studies anticipate that Queensland will experience a six-fold increase in the number of people with dementia by 2050, which equates to 171,000 Queenslanders.
“This increase is expected to occur because of several factors including the general ageing of the Queensland population and the rising numbers of older people moving here to retire.
“Research shows that the best way to help people with dementia and their carers is when community care structures allow them to stay in familiar surroundings, such as their own home, with familiar people.
“This new strategy outlines for HACC service providers the strategies and skills that will lead to the best help and support for people with dementia.”
Alzheimer’s disease accounts for more than 50 per cent of dementia-related illness although many other causes exist including Pick’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Down’s syndrome, alcohol and drug-related illnesses and brain injury resulting from accidents.
“I believe the new strategy will make a real difference to the growing number of Queenslanders experiencing or likely to experience dementia,” Mr Pitt said.
“The strategy contains both statewide and direct care initiatives including extra HACC services and capital funding for centre-based day care for people with dementia and their carers.
“Carers such as family members, friends or neighbours play a crucial role in supporting people with dementia to stay in their own homes — and the new strategy aims to ensure that role is made easier.”
