The Honourable Warren Pitt
The artistic abilities of young people from the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre will be revealed tonight at the launch of the ‘Youth Works 2007 – creating brighter futures’ art exhibition.
Communities and Youth Minister Warren Pitt will open the exhibition at Parliament House this evening, showcasing paintings and ceramics created by about 25 budding young artists currently in detention.
“This exhibition recognises the talent and efforts of young residents working towards a brighter future,” Mr Pitt said.
“These talented young artists should take pride in the fact that their artworks have come together to form such a high-quality exhibition.”
Mr Pitt said the artists had taken part in the detention centre’s Youth Works art program.
“Youth Works has been a positive influence in the lives of residents since 2004 — and the public exhibition is an important part of its continued success,” he said.
“It’s all about giving due recognition to the determination of young people to develop life skills and talents while in detention.”
Mr Pitt said the artists had been presented with certificates of achievement at an awards ceremony attended by friends and family at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre last week.
“One of the more positive and pleasing aspects of the program has been the noticeable increase in the level of self-esteem among the young artists,” he said.
Mr Pitt said the award-winning artwork would be displayed to the public at Parliament House until 26 August and would also be featured in a commemorative catalogue.
Artworks will be for sale from Wednesday 22 August, with the funds held in trust for the young person. Youth Works 2007 is a partnership between the Department of Communities and Education Queensland.
