Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
FALLS WELCOME BUT WATER WORK GOES ON
Weekend rain and the prospect of more in the next few days is most welcome but the Premier today thanked South-East Queenslander’s for their continued adherence to water restrictions.
“The 30-35mm of rain that had fallen across the Wivenhoe Dam system catchment in the 24 hours to 9am, is tantalisingly close to the 50mm needed before water run-off into the dams begins,” said Mr Beattie.
“A low forming off Fraser Island is cause for some hope that further rain will fall in the catchment this week.”
Mr Beattie said that the rain has not as yet impacted on work across the Water Grid with training, maintenance or in-door options being undertaken today.
“We are still on track for the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project pumping treated water to Swanbank Power station by the end of the month,” he said.
“The remaining work there is all indoors, so it is not affected.”
He said that while the above-average August falls are most welcome investigations into emergency back-up supplies of drinking water for the South-East are being fast-tracked.
Firms such as GE Water, Thiess, Worley Parsons and Sumitomo are among major companies offering 28 emergency supply solutions that individually could provided on average up to 125ML of drinking water a day.
“We'll do whatever it takes to ensure SEQ has the water it needs.
“Options for emergency supplies might include large-scale barges along the Brisbane River to pump desalinated water directly into the system or we could have water delivered by super-tankers.
“The projects will be shortlisted by the end of the month so we can have back-up supplies ready in the extremely unlikely scenario that they are needed,” he said.
“Combined with the Government's world-class $9 billion Water Grid projects, these initiatives will provide the water South-East Queensland needs,” Mr Beattie said.
Among companies involved are: Sumitomo, Industrial Water Initiatives (Hunwick), AJ Lucas, Marecon, United Utilities, Thiess, Thiess Services, Degremont, SPA, Aqualia, Clough, Worley Parsons, Transfield Services, Arcadia, GE Water, Solar Sailor and Aquatankers and Solartran
