The Honourable Warren Pitt
The music of some of history’s greatest rock ’n’ roll stars will help kick-start the 22nd annual Seniors Week celebrations at South Bank today.
Communities and Seniors Minister Warren Pitt said performances by Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and Roy Orbison tribute shows, as well as other free activities, were highlights of today’s Fun Day and Expo for the state launch of Seniors Week.
“Seniors Week, which runs from 18 to 26 August, promotes positive attitudes towards older people and ageing, fosters inter-generational relationships and encourages more seniors to lead active lifestyles,” Mr Pitt said.
“This year’s theme is ‘The time of your life’ — so it’s fitting that we celebrate with a jam-packed event that will ensure our seniors, their families and friends have the times of their lives.
“This year we have combined two of the week’s biggest events — the Seniors fun day and the popular Seniors Card expo — into one huge celebration.”
Mr Pitt said the event started at 8.30 am with a free breakfast, followed by free activities and demonstrations in the Suncorp Piazza including tai chi, rock ’n’ roll dancing, screen printing and line dancing — with lunch from 11.30 am.
“I encourage as many people as possible to put their best foot forward and join in either the five-kilometre or the 2.5-kilometre fun walks, starting at 9.30 am,” he said.
“Businesses participating in the Seniors Card Business Discount Scheme will also be at the expo, showcasing products and services discounted for seniors.”
Mr Pitt said more than 300 events would take place during Seniors Week this year, thanks to Department of Communities funding of more than $185,000 to community organisations, local governments and the Queensland Seniors Council.
