Land for the future expansion of the Nambour Special School precinct has been secured following the signing of a $2.3million contract for more than two hectares.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the purchase of the adjoining land in Nambour’s Windsor Road would allow for the school’s future development to cater for its growing number of students.
“The purchase of this land will give us room to expand the school as enrolments grow,” Mr Welford said.
“The school has 102 students and enrolments are expected to increase by four or five students a year.
“The school currently has 14 permanent classrooms and a number of modular buildings, but the existing school site of 2.44 hectares has exhausted all spare space and cannot provide facilities for further growth.
“The parcel of land we purchased is strategically located in an emerging residential corridor and we wanted to act now to ensure that Nambour Special School will always have the best facilities possible.
“One of my goals as Minister is to ensure that every Special School is upgraded to provide the best quality facilities for our children with special needs.
“There should be no student with special needs labouring in their learning and experiencing their education in facilities that are outdated or rundown.
“The purchase of this land will allow us to expand the Nambour Special School when needed and provide first-class facilities for students.”
Nambour Special School is located in a ‘special needs’ precinct incorporating the Nambour Hear and Say Centre and the Nambour Therapy Centre.
The Nambour Special School is one of the Sunshine Coast’s two special schools, which are both experiencing rapid growth.
The opportunity for significant expansion at the Currimundi Special School is limited as the site is landlocked between residential and beach protection land.
