Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure
The Honourable Anna Bligh

16 August 2007 (11am)

Queensland Deputy Premier and Treasurer Anna Bligh will officially open the 2007 ‘QUEENSLAND ON SHOW, WORK AND PLAY EXPO’ at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, Clarendon Street, Southbank, Melbourne at 11.40AM, tomorrow (Friday, 17 August, 2007).

Ms Bligh said that already more than 500 people have pre-registered for the Expo.

“Of those:
  • 64 % have a university degree, so they are well qualified
  • 65 % are over 35 - so they are well experienced
  • A third are currently working in medicine and healthcare
  • Another third are working in engineering, IT and education.”

“More than 200 Queensland groups will be represented at the Expo. Jobs, real estate and lifestyle opportunities – will be on display.”

“Last year, 20,351 people left Victoria for Queensland – second only to the 50,488 people who left NSW to do the same - they (just like the Kangaroos will soon do) all saw the light.

“Our unemployment is around 3.5 per cent and in the year to May 2007 we created 104,300 jobs. That’s 37% of Australia’s jobs total and we’ve got just 20% of the population.

“It’s not just jobs - no one can deny, it’s also our idyllic lifestyle – our energised yet relaxed way of life – which entices many people north of the Tweed, especially families.”

PS: “It’s 21 degrees in the Mackay, the Whitsundays and Hamilton Island and it's currently 9-16 degrees in Melbourne.
